SAWUBONA (We See You): Promoting Equity Through Research in Palliative Care Virtual Conference
Had you been walking by the Research Office in the Centre for Excellence on the morning of Wednesday 24th, you’d had heard through the speakers the sound of the 190 delegates who were registered for the first ever virtual Sawubona Conference, eagerly awaiting the opening address from our very own Dr Zoebia Islam.
Zoebia is the first ever Chair of the national Sawubona Forum. Sawubona is a Zulu greeting that translates to “I See You”. It is more than just a way of saying hello, as it recognises the worth and dignity of each person which is particularly important in the context of palliative and end of life care.
The conference, which LOROS hosted alongside Hospice UK and the Good Grief Festival, highlighted the importance of equity in health care for all.
It is important that we treat patients and their families as individuals, taking into account, for example, things like their religious beliefs. This is particularly important for LOROS, as it is one of the 12 priorities on The Big Picture. We live in one of the most diverse cities in the UK, and the work the research team have completed with their Thinking Ahead study really does mean we are leading the way with the thinking in this area.
Presentations from the video will be available shortly via www.loros.co.uk/centreforexcellence
