Sharon Hannant is sharing why she joined our Twilight Walk to raise money for LOROS in memory of her husband.
“Barry was a calm, caring man that loved to be outdoors. During the warmer months when it was too hot to be inside, I used to find him outside at three in the morning, sitting in the garden on the bench.”
Sharon’s husband, Barry Hannant, was diagnosed with cancer in October 2019.
When Glenfield hospital in Leicester had done all they could for him in Summer 2020, a bed was quickly found for him at LOROS.
“It was like walking into a hotel and the care and the warmth was incredible. I immediately felt so comfortable and so did Baz, they took such good care of us.”

Barry’s nurses knew he loved the garden, and one morning, when he started to get restless, they decided to do something special, opening up the French doors onto the courtyard, and wheeling Barry’s bed into the fresh air.
“As soon as we were outside his face lit up, and he said, 'This is what I wanted. This is just what I want.' When he said he’d like to get out of his bed, the nurses put him in a wheelchair, and wrapped him up in blankets so he could have a proper look around. Our youngest son, Brett, pushed the wheelchair, and myself and our eldest son, Darren, walked either side, and together, in the LOROS gardens, we were able to have private, quality family time together.

“We didn’t know it at the time, but going out into those gardens was to be Barry’s last wish, and LOROS made it come true. I feel so lucky to have spent those moments with him.”
In the early hours of the next morning, Barry died peacefully in his sleep, with his wife and sister by his side.
“I didn’t want my Baz to die, nobody wants their loved one to die, but I’ve said so many times, LOROS was the right place, and I wouldn’t have wanted him to have died anywhere else.”
This year with her friends, Sharon took part in the ‘Out of this World’ themed Twilight Walk. Dressed as ‘Baz’ Angels,’ Sharon paid tribute to the man she loved, and the ‘angels’ that looked after him.
“It’s important for everyone to recognise the amazing work that LOROS does. We not only raised money as a pledge to my Baz, but also for everybody in the county, because we never know when we’re going to need LOROS.”
