LOROS Hospice announces plans to expand services out into Rutland community

LOROS is set to expand their services into the Rutland community, thanks to a new partnership with Uppingham Surgery.

This winter, the Groby Road Hospice will make it easier for residents in Rutland and the surrounding areas to access a number of their services by using Uppingham Surgery as an outreach unit.

LOROS doctors will be providing clinics at Uppingham Surgery, with counselling and bereavement support, as well as education services also planning to be available there.

While hospice staff won’t be located at the surgery on a permanent basis, LOROS is hoping there will be a provision of its services on site before the end of the year.

Director of Strategy and Development at LOROS, Karen Ashcroft said: “We’re really pleased to be announcing this news and it’s so great to see how excited LOROS staff are getting too.

“Nationally and locally, the feedback provided by patient and carer groups states that wherever possible people want care to be provided closer to home.

“After meeting with local clinicians in Rutland, we discovered that a lot of residents in the area said travelling to Groby Road is too far and identified the need for our services to be delivered closer to them.”

“While we already have fantastic home visiting volunteers and community nurse specialists at LOROS, we’re looking at building upon our community services by offering care in a clinically safe environment in Uppingham.”

The main Hospice will continue to deliver services from Groby Road, for patients, their families and carers to access as usual.

LOROS CEO John Knight said: “The decision to expand beyond the Hospice is a big priority in our three-year strategy, which includes a key priority as focusing on providing care in the community, while supporting patients and their families closer to home.

“We’re looking at gaining a real presence in a number of local communities, with Rutland being the first.

“This is the start of an exciting journey for us, as we continue to expand out into the community throughout the coming year.”

Alongside a variety of community initiatives across Leicestershire and Rutland, LOROS will also be introducing a specially adapted mobile unit, which will visit local communities, to raise awareness of the services the Hospice offers.

The multi-purpose mobile unit will deliver some aspects of clinical services, as well as providing education sessions and will also be taken to various fundraising events across Leicestershire and Rutland.
