Sunday 3rd May saw the first of our charity events in our efforts to raise money for our charity of the year, LOROS.
This event was not for the faint hearted. Two members of our team signed ourselves up to this event, neither of which are inexperienced cyclists and have both ridden the distance and further before, but this event was most certainly a challenge. They had the option of 58km, 100km and 160km. Sensibly, but maybe not sensibly enough, they chose the 100km (63 miles) route.
Fingers were crossed in the weeks leading up to the sportive for good weather but unfortunately they weren’t that lucky. Sunday arrived and it was wet, extremely wet. But regardless they turned up to the event HQ at Loughborough University in wet weather kit and set off with a wave of about 15 other riders at 9:30am.
The route sent them out towards Nanpantan, Melbourne and Ticknall before bringing us back down towards Whitwick, Thornton, Markfield and finally through Woodhouse before sending the riders up the epic Beacon Hill to then drop back down into Loughborough for the finish. Thankfully the rain eased off about 24 km (15 miles) into the ride however this didn’t make up for climb after climb that had been packed into the route. For those of you that thought that the Midlands didn’t have any tough hills, this ride most certainly proves you wrong!
All in all, despite the Tour de France style climbs it was a great day, the event was brilliantly organised with excellent signage, support vehicles if needed and well stocked feed stations throughout the route (which were much appreciated!) We have managed to raise over £170 so far for LOROS just from this event alone so a big thank you to everyone who has sponsored our team!
Keep your eyes peeled for more of our fundraising events throughout the year.
