Nearly 500 people enjoyed hearing about the career of television personality Alison Hammond who was the guest speaker at the annual LOROS ladies' luncheon.

The event, at the King Power Stadium, raised more than £10,000 for the hospice, which cares for people across Leicestershire and Rutland. It was hosted by the hospice's president Jennifer, Lady Gretton, the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

Alison went on to win public hearts on Strictly Come Dancing.

She is also a regular presenter on ITV's This Morning.

Many people know her for her sense of fun and remember her tap dancing with Renee Zellweger, rapping with Will Smith and jamming with Russell Crowe.

Alison has also appeared in various television dramas, including Boon, Chalkface, Doctors, Locksmith, Yes, and three series of the Bafta award-winning Palace Hill.

Wendy Marshall, LOROS fundraising co-ordinator, said: "We were delighted and honoured to have Alison as our guest speaker this year."

Past guest speakers include Julia Bradbury, Claire Lomas, Anne Widdecombe and Dr Hilary Jones.

The money raised will go towards running of the hospice, which cares for adults with cancer, progressive neurological conditions and end-stage organ failure for whom curative treatment is no longer possible.

It cares for more than 2,500 patients each year. The annual cost of running the hospice is put at £7.5 million a year.

It receives about one third of the funding needed from the NHS, which leaves £4.5 million a year to raise.

The hospice includes a 31-bed in-patient unit, a palliative day therapy service, a counselling service for patients and their families, lymphoedema and medical outpatients' clinics.
