By Leicester Mercury | Posted: April 13, 2014 Hundreds of people turned out to watch Mercury staff take on former Leicester City players at a fund-raising football tournament this afternoon.

Staff and students from De Montfort University also put together a team for the event, which raised more than £500 for Leicestershire charities LOROS and Wishes 4 Kids.

The tournament, which kicked off at midday, took place at the Greene King Stadium, in Hinckley.

Former City player Julian Joachim said: "It's always nice to have a run out and see some old faces.

"It's great we've managed to raise a bit for charity, too."

Other ex-Foxes favourites who made up the Leicester Legends squad included Matthew Piper and Gerry Taggart.

For manager Tom Naughton, it was his 101st appearance in the Legends team. He said: "It's been a great show - everyone's had a cracking day and we've had two very competitive games.

"Big thanks to everyone who took part."

Mercury reporter Peter Warzynski, business editor Ian Griffin and sports reporter James Sharpe were among the players in the Mercury side.

Player and coach Peter said: “We all had a really good day.

“We were extremely pleased with the turn out and I’m so glad we raised lots of money for charity - at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.”

Neither the Mercury or De Montfort University were able to beat the ultimate champions, Leicester Legends, who won both their matches.
