A contestant from TV's Great British Bake Off has helped launch a recipe book at the University of Leicester.

Members of the university's Baking Society launched a book containing their favourite baking recipes, including Mediterranean pinwheels, 'ultimate brownies' and raspberry and white chocolate cake.

University of Leicester graduate Ali Imdad, who appeared in this year's series of The Great British Bake Off before being knocked out last month, attended the launch yesterday and gave a baking demonstration.

Ali made it into the fourth week of the contest and impressed judges with a series of dishes, including vanilla latte mini cakes and a chocolate, raspberry and passion fruit engagement cake.

Ali said: "The first thing I ever baked was during my third year at university here.

"Baking is a skill so many of us possess but too few fulfil.

"It should be a joy – it really does allow you to unwind and takes your mind off of the stresses of university life."

The recipe book will be priced at £3 and 70 per cent of the proceeds made from book sales will go to LOROS.

Emily Gussin, president of the Baking Society and a third year English student, said: "I thought a society recipe book would be something we could all cherish and be really proud of in the future.

"I couldn't quite believe Ali agreed to come along to our event and do some demonstrations for us.

"The Great British Bake Off inspires a lot of people because it proves that everyone can have a go at baking."
