Leicester City legend and LOROS Patron Alan Birchenall MBE visited us in March to help launch our new Day Therapy Service.
The new service runs at the Hospice every Wednesday and Thursday and on Fridays at Loughborough Hospital. We deliver an enhanced service to our patients, with everybody able to access nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, complementary therapists, chaplains, a creative therapy facilitator and volunteers.
Taking the new Day Therapy Service out to Loughborough Hospital means that we are also able to deliver specialist care to terminally ill patients in the local community, ensuring care closer to home.
Ken Robert, a Day Therapy patient, said of the visit: “It was wonderful to meet Alan, we chatted about football and the olden days of Leicester City Football Club. He was surprised to hear about one of my other conditions - alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency - as it is uncommon.
“I really enjoy coming to LOROS – the staff are amazing and it’s great to meet so many people. Being here also gives my wife, Helen, a break and some much needed rest. I have thoroughly enjoyed today.”
Before leaving the Hospice, Alan also made time to visit patients of the 31-bed inpatient unit, much to the delight of patients and their families.
On his visit, Alan Birchenall, added: “It was wonderful to meet the patients and staff of this important new service. LOROS do a fantastic job and this service adds to the support given to the terminally ill, not only at the Hospice, but out in the community also. It’s such a valuable and special support to those that use it. I feel privileged to be a LOROS Patron and to be able to offer my help and support.”
