Dozens of local bands will be playing at a charity music festival over the next five nights. White Noise Festival is on at Firebug, in Millstone Lane, in the city centre, from tonight.

Acts playing include These Furrows, Codex Leicester, Fatal Star, Dark Dark Horse, Maybeshewill, The Demons of Ruby Mae and By The Rivers.

The twice-yearly festival has raised about £6,000 for Leicestershire hospice LOROS since it started in 2008, and organisers are hoping their latest event – which has been extended to five nights for the bank holiday – will boost funds even more.

Co-founder and Maybeshewill guitarist John Helps, 28, said: "We wanted to support a local charity as it's a local festival.

"A lot of people we know have been helped by LOROS, so that's why we get involved with them."

The first White Noise Festival took place in December 2008, organised by John and friend Scott West, guitarist and singer in Codex Leicester.

The idea was to stage a gig to showcase Leicester talent while raising cash for a good cause, and the event has got bigger and bigger each year.

John said: "We wanted to make it as fun as possible and get many of our friends involved. People come for the whole weekend, so we don't really stick to any particular genre either, it's a really varied line-up.

"People come for a metalcore band on the Thursday and will stay for some folk stuff on the Sunday. It's nice that everyone is able to get a really good reaction."

All the acts performing over the weekend will be playing for free.

LOROS fundraising spokesman Alex Gamble said: "We are grateful these bands donate all profits from the gig to LOROS.

"Ninety per cent of every pound donated will go to patient care, so they really are making a difference."

White Noise is on from today until Monday. Day tickets cost £5, weekend tickets £10.
