Joe Virk wanted to achieve making his mum smile while making a difference to others and it’s a case of mission completed.
Joe said, “This year I am raising money for LOROS as a testament to the strongest woman I know, Paula Virk.
“In December 2006, I was given the news that my Mum had Breast Cancer. For the next few years, I grew up watching her fight this illness and beating it. With the love of my Dad and the rest of my family she was able to beat the illness and it seemed that our lives were back to normal when she was eventually given the all clear in 2011.
"She managed to do all of this whilst raising three teenagers who are inspired by her now and would be nothing without the love she has shown us whilst growing up. However, in January of this year, my parents told me that my mother's cancer had returned. Unfortunately, this time she will be unable to win her battle. The way I've watched this woman deal with the news is admirable, and I feel I should do something that would make her every bit as proud of me as I am of her. She has provided me, and the rest of our family with the strength to continue and she deserves to be acknowledged for this.
"For this reason, I decided to participate in The Colour Run – Birmingham 2014 for LOROS, a charity that care for terminally ill patients. I am not trying to change the world. All I want to achieve is to make a small difference to one person, and I wanted to cross the finish line and see the beautiful smile of my Mum.
"I would also like to thank friends and family for their support throughout the last few months; a big thanks to those who ran the Colour run; Ryan Brown, Tom Wisniewski, Conor Pallatt, George Riggall and Sam Rossi.”
Senior Fundraiser Adrian Walker from LOROS said, “We are truly grateful to Joe and his friends for raising such vital funds for LOROS. To date he has raised an amazing £2,110, far exceeding his original target of £200. Joe and his mother should feel very proud of the difference this will make for Patients and their families."
